Neil Gaiman is coming to town

Dad is super excited because he found out last night that his favorite author Neil Gaiman is coming to town to do a reading. He's glad he found out beforehand, because if he missed the chance to see him he'd be really bummed. But now he's like a kid knowing Disney is on the calendar, but still weeks away. Dad can't even buy tickets for three weeks, but since there are only 200 seats available he has the ticket order page up on a tab ready to go (already). Dad's a nerd. But he gives us treats so we love him. (Mom won't get to go because it is opening night for the first play of the season at her theatre and she has to be there. She's not a Neil Gaiman super fan, but she's happy for Dad.)

Also, here's a funny story about a bear who broke into a candy store, with a security video of the bear.

We aren't familiar with Neil Gaiman's writing... my human's favorite authors are all dead! She needs to get a grip on the 21st century when it comes to books.

We don't know who Neil Gaiman is but if your dad likes him, he must be good.

Ooohhhhh! Mom enjoys his short stories! She didn't see him when he came to Minnesota recently but there was a big stink about his $45,000 speaking fee which was paid through a special state fund. He was called a "pencil-necked weasel" and a "thief" by one of the state republicans.
Find the controversy: I googled Neil Gaiman Minneapolis
and it brought up all the stories. Enjoy!

Back again. Just looking over Gaimans own site listing all his work. Wow...he's got tons of stuff out that I wasn't aware of. I first became aware of him when I read The Graveyard Book. It made me want more (as good authors will do) and I've since read several of his short story collections. Will definitely look into more of him, even if he is a pencil necked weasel! (Read more stuff on the City Pages blog, it's sooo funny especially about the legislator offering a "half-assed apology" because his mom made him do it! Oh well, off to check out Amazon!

Go to Neil Gaiman's website for the background on the "pencil necked weasel" controversy. There was a fund set up by the libraries specifically to bring speakers. If I remember it right, it was a use it of lose it fund, and it was running out. So they brought him in. And he donated the money to charity. (more here: http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2011/05/weasel-necked-pencils-part-i-hope-last.html and http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2011/05/opinions-of-pencil-necked-weasel-thief.html). Plus he's a cat lover. I recommend Stardust because it is a good intro to his writing, and good story, and my favorite villian-gets-it-in-the-end finale. And read the poem Instructions, too. (If you can find the audio of him reading it, it is wonderful.)
